He knew everything that was going to happen, other than (possibly) how long the seeds would take to grow. He planned the whole thing, clearly designed to eventually force the elements back into the tree.
Yep! From that we know for sure that Discord -knew- about the tree since he tried to stop it. We can assume he knew about the elements.
